How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on eWater Cooler starts with one question: will this product fit the way you get, store or serve drinking water? For a water cooler, that means where it will sit, how you load it, what water supply it needs and how you will clean it.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with the person and the place

A bottom-load cooler may suit someone who does not want to lift a heavy bottle overhead. A plumbed dispenser may be a poor fit if there is no nearby water line.

We check dimensions, capacity, bottle or connection type, dispensing temperatures, power needs and where the product is meant to be used. For filters, kettles, ice makers, containers and bottles, we look at the water source, serving needs, storage space and everyday handling.

2. We compare specs and features

We look at the details makers list: cooling and heating options, pump or filter type, materials, controls, cleaning cycles, included parts and replacement supplies.

Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms the maker lists and any maintenance the product needs.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like leaks, noisy pumps, slow dispensing, hard-to-clean parts, filters that are difficult to replace or ice makers that need frequent cleaning.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A compact countertop dispenser may suit one reader, while a large-capacity cooler or filter system may suit another.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages up to date

Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell close models under similar names, so we check each model name and what comes in the box, and we only link new units.

We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not hands-on tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.

Follow the maker's instructions for setup, cleaning and filter replacement. For drinking water safety, use a filter certified for the contaminants you need to address and follow its replacement schedule.
